Spoke with our RV tech who's coming Friday to fix the a/c and described the generator problem and need for new batteries. He asked me a few questions, including when the shore power went out, if the lights that work on battery were on (yes, they were, which means the batteries did have a charge). He asked us to check the voltage on the batteries, and thus confirmed that the batteries were fine; it was probably the transfer switch.
He came over to get some information off the switch so he could order a new one, and lo and behold - nothing wrong with the switch. He took his volt meter to the pole and discovered there is a problem with the campground's electric. Recall this happened twice before! One leg wasn't generating enough power which is causing the whole system to collapse. I think one of the problems is they have the handyman working on it instead of a licensed electrician. I did demand they fix this immediately as we can't be without power!
On a positive note, it'll only be the cost of the service call but not $1K to replace batteries or transfer switch.
