Thankfully, it's "only" money and we have faith that G-d has always provided for our needs, so we'll get through this as well.
First... Mitch's recovery: this week has gone way, way better than we expected. The first day when the nerve blocker wore off was a little rough, but the rest of the week was much better. He didn't complain at all, and mostly he said it felt like a continuous dull ache (pain level 2ish). At no point was he in intense pain. Although the dr. said he could take the pain pills 2 every 4 hours, he's only taken about 1 or 2 a day. For the last 2 days, he's had the sling off about 95% of the time, including sleeping and only using it (as directed) when he plans to move around a lot, the purpose of which is to avoid moving the arm more than from the elbow down. He sees the doctor on Friday, at which point the dressing will be removed and he'll probably be allowed more mobility and given more exercises (there is no physical therapy being recommended).
So, what has hit all at once? Besides all the doctor and hospital fees required up front, the air conditioning/heating unit broke down (most likely the condenser burnt out). Warning: boring explanation so feel free to skip this paragraph. It's a really odd situation: we have 2 zones (1 for the front--kitchen, dining room, living room, and 1 for the bedroom. It is zone 1 (kitchen etc) that's out. The two units on the roof are obsolete and therefore they can't get the parts to replace. Our warranty covers replacing the whole unit if parts can't be found. But here's the tricky part. In order to replace the unit, it requires a new thermostat because since the system is obsolete (this RV is 13 years old). Normally, that wouldn't be a big deal, BUT... BOTH a/c units are attached to the same thermostat, so if the thermostat is replaced, then the other zone won't be compatible with it. So there were only 2 options: replace the other unit so it will work with the new thermostat or have 2 thermostats, 1 for each zone. The warranty company will only pay for anything that is actually broken, so they will cover the cost of the new unit but not replacing the 2nd unit or even the new thermostat (we decided to go with 2 thermostats as it's far less expensive).
Next... our generator keeps trying to turn on. This is generally due to a bad battery (not 100% certain, but there's a pretty good chance). There is an electrical conflict because you can't run the generator and be on shore power at the same time, so when it tries to start, there's too much electric being generated, which causes our surge protector to protect us and shuts all the power down. Unfortunately, there is no on/off switch on the generator to stop this and as of now, there's no power. We can't really run the generator because it will use up too much propane and Mitch isn't allowed to lift things yet so we wouldn't be able to replace it for a long while. The most likely solution is (asap) to replace the 2 batteries. They generally have a shelf life of 3-4 years and these are 5-6 years old.
Now, onto all the money we've spent in the last week or so (we've depleted our savings by 50% and it will probably be even more soon).
- 1800 in advance for the surgeon
- 1900 in advance for the hospital
- air conditioning unit $2300 (ok, just need to lay that out. Our out of pocket costs will be about $400)
- batteries: about 1000
