The only reason I need to post this is so that I have the history, in case I ever need to refer back to it (as it turns out, we had a tire blowout, causing the truck to be in the shop for about a week, back in 2015, and I needed to find out some information from that. If not for my blog, I wouldn't know!)...
Shabbat services were being held this past Saturday at 8:00 am instead of the normal 10:30, due to the need to be home to finish eating chometz by 11:15 (which was required to do for Kiddush). I chose not to go, but Mitch wanted to help make the minyan, so he went alone. It's a 20 min drive.
Unfortunately, he was in a very bad accident on the way over, which was due to complete sun blindness. Apparently, there were 3 cars in front of him at a red traffic light, which he didn't see due to the sun in his eyes. Needless to say, there was a 4 car pile up, with the one in front of him being smashed from both ends. Thankfully, no one was killed (although he said if someone had been in the back seat of the car in front, they might have been). The drive in that car was taken to the hospital, but he thinks it was out of precaution; she didn't seem to be hurt.
As for the truck, the front end is entirely smashed. Apparently, the tow driver was able to drive it around the corner (to a parking lot, to get it out of the road). There was a lot of smoke, which he said was probably due to a broken belt, so it's hopeful that it may be driveable and therefore repairable (not totalled). For now, it's sitting at the tow station until the insurance adjuster can take a look and let us know first steps.
Unfortunately, Mitch had to take an Uber home (it was only about 3 miles from home) because although he still has his company car, I'm not an insured driver on it and I don't want to take any chances (it's also rather risky for him to be driving it while he's out on disability and not working). We're looking into whether the insurance will cover a rental car. They told us it didn't, but apparently, in 2015, it did and I never changed my policy. So also waiting for a response from the insurance broker. Meanwhile, he does still need to go to physical therapy and will need to take the chance until we know more.
Meanwhile, it's the 2nd day of Passover. We did go to services yesterday and today, although we aren't observing the holiday in as orthodox fashion as we should (i.e. using electronics).
Watch this space for an update.
